Getting To Know Our Volunteers!

Marmora & Lake Library

The Marmora & Lake Public Library is fortunate to have amazing volunteers. It is thanks to these individuals that the library is able to offer many of our programs, process new books, and get our books re-shelved in a timely fashion. With such wonderful volunteers helping out at the library, we thought it would be fun to get to know a little bit about the friendly people who generously give their time to help the library.

We are kicking off our series with the talented educator Mary-Elizabeth Stubbings who co-created the Dare To Read program.

Name:  Mary-Elizabeth Stubbings

What do you do at the Library?

I volunteer as a Reading Instructor supporting the Dare to Read Program.

Creating and organizing the Dare to Read program with Kathy, the CEO of the Library, I am thrilled to say it is now in its third year of supporting any interested community member young or old!

Run with the support of volunteers and contributions from our community, the program is becoming more well known and now has a waiting list.  As a result, we have started a new program called How to Teach Reading.  Our intent is to support any interested volunteer with reading instruction and then, with their commitment, we hope to deplete our waiting list and assist the waiting readers as soon as possible.

Why do you volunteer at the library?

I volunteer because I believe it is vital to give back to the community and the library provides an opportunity to do just that.

I volunteer not only to share my passion of teaching reading but also to take part in many of the other classes available.  These programs are varied. The library brings a wide variety of age groups together which brings laughter, respect, and a community.

Finally, I volunteer at the library as it is a community place where everyone is welcomed allowing many to develop a sense of camaraderie - no small feat from the amazing staff who greet you each and every time you arrive.

What are your three favourite books?

My favourite books are many. However, because I have been teaching children how to read I will stick to 3 of my favourite novels for elementary students:

 1.  Hatchet  written by Gary Paulsen

 2.  The Rats of Nimh written by Robert C. O’Brien

 3.  The Silverwing Series written by Kenneth Oppel

What fictional character are you most like?

Kathryn Janewaya fictional character on Star Trek Voyager.  I enjoy her character as she is adventurous, can deal with any situation that is thrown her way, and is respectful to all.
